The Denver Broncos signed their cornerback Pat Surtain II to a contract extension on Wednesday and made him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history in the process.
Surtain reportedly received a four-year, $96 million contract that comes with $77.5 million in guaranteed money. He had two years left on his rookie deal, meaning he is now tied to the franchise through 2029.
Surtain’s average annual salary of $24 million on a new deal surpasses the $21 million per year that Green Bay Packers are paying corner Jaire Alexander. It also comes above the $21.025 million on average that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave safety Antoine Winfield Jr. earlier this year.
The Broncos confirmed Surtain’s new deal on social media without revealing the financial terms of the agreement.
Selected ninth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Surtain made an immediate impact as a rookie by playing in all 16 games and finishing the campaign with four interceptions. He followed that up with two stellar seasons that included a pair of Pro Bowl selections and a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2022.
Surtain is widely considered one of the top corners in the league and has numbers to prove it. During his three years in the league, the Alabama product made 187 tackles to go with seven interceptions, 36 passes defended, and one defensive touchdown.
