The San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback, Brock Purdy, have some soul-searching to do after a rough outing in a 33-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.
Purdy had one of his worst performances as a pro, throwing a career-high four interceptions and finishing with a ghastly 42.6 passer rating. To make things worse, he had to leave the game in the fourth quarter with a left shoulder injury.
“He’s played this long, he never had a game like this,” said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan of Purdy. “It’s pretty unusual. That’s the reality of the NFL. I’m not saying it’s bound to happen but wish he didn’t have as many picks today.”
But it wasn’t just that Purdy was making mistakes. The Ravens also had a lot to do with creating opportunities for interceptions with deflections and timely hits.
The 49ers were widely considered to be the best team in the NFL, and Purdy was among the favorites for the MVP award before the Ravens game. But it is safe to say things have now changed.
The Ravens now have the league-best 12-3 record and are riding a five-game winning streak, the longest in the league. Meanwhile, their quarterback Lamar Jackson is now trending as an MVP favorite after putting together another strong outing that saw him throw for 252 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for an additional 45 yards.
