Milwaukee Brewers starting centerfielder Lorenzo Cain informed his team on Saturday that he would be opting out and not participating in the remainder of the 2020 season.

Cain, who began the season on the Brewers’ active roster and decided to play before the start of the season, had a change of heart after the first week of action and decided that his best option was to sit out this season.

In a statement, the veteran outfielder said, “With all of the uncertainty and unknowns surrounding our game at this time, I feel that this is the best decision for me, my wife, and our three kids.”

He ended the statement by adding that he was happy with how the Brewers handled the news, saying, “The Brewers organization was very understanding and supportive of my decision, and I thank them for that. I wish all of my great teammates the best of luck this season and look forward to getting back on the field in 2021. Please stay safe.”

Cain had gotten off to a hot start in 2020 before changing his mind, batting .333 with 4 runs and 2 RBI in 5 games. The two-time All-Star and 2019 Gold Glove Award winner will leave a big hole in Milwaukee’s lineup and is a tough blow for a Brewers squad that is looking to compete for the playoffs.

Ben Gamel is expected to pick up the bulk of the playing time in center during Cain’s absence this season.
