The Milwaukee Brewers confirmed on Friday that their right-hand pitcher Brandon Woodruff had surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his throwing shoulder. The procedure is expected to keep Woodruff out for most, if not the entire 2024 MLB season.

Woodruff was diagnosed with a capsular injury in early October and was forced to miss the National League Wild Card Series, which the Brewers lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 30-year-old played was limited to only 11 games during the regular season.

Woodruff was outstanding in 2023 during the time he was available. He made 11 starts, going 5-1 with a career-best 2.28 ERA and 74 strikeouts.

“Brandon is not only one of the best pitchers in our franchise’s history but is also a valued member of our organization off the field,” said Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold, announcing Woodruff’s surgery. “He and his wife, Jonie, have gone above and beyond here in the community. Brandon’s health is our top priority at this point in time.”

If Woodruff misses the entire 2024, there is a strong possibility he will never play for the Brewers again. He is eligible for arbitration next season and can become a free agent afterward.

Woodruff spent all of his seven years in the majors with Milwaukee. He has a record of 46-26 with a 3.10 career ERA and two All-Star nods on his resume.
