The reigning NBA champions, Boston Celtics, have agreed to a one-year deal with guard Lonnie Walker IV.
Walker is signing with the Celtics after spending the 2023-24 NBA season with the Brooklyn Nets. He played 58 games in the Nets’ jersey, averaging 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while shooting 38.4% from behind the three-point line.
Walker’s agreement with the Celtics was confirmed by his agent, George S. Langberg, although the financial terms remain under wraps.
Adding Walker provides some additional depth for the Celtics as they prepare to make a run to defend their NBA title. The Celtics are entering the 2024-25 NBA season as favorites to repeat, given that they are bringing back the majority of last season’s roster.
Lonnie Walker IV entered the league as the first-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs in 2018. He had his best year as a pro in 2021-22 when he played 70 games and averaged 12.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, all-career highs.
Walker later played one season with the Los Angeles Lakers before joining the Nets. While in Brooklyn, he didn’t get as much playing time as he expected and put together his worst campaign since his sophomore year as a pro. Walker later said that he felt disrespected by the team’s coaching staff.
