The Boston Celtics are considered to be the best team in NBA this season, but that apparently doesn’t mean the franchise doesn’t want to get even better. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Celtics are currently pursuing a trade for the San Antonio Spurs’ big man Jakob Poeltl.

Charania reports that Poeltl has significant interest around the league and the Spurs are willing to listen to offers as the 27-year-old player is set to become a free agent in the offseason. The Celtics are currently the frontrunners to pull off a deal with San Antonio, although other teams are monitoring the situation, including the Toronto Raptors.

Acquiring Poeltl would boost the Celtics’ frontcourt depth and give them another reliable defender. However, the deal would only make sense for Boston if they could get him at the right price, which doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment.

Reportedly, the Spurs have told interested teams that they want two first-round picks for Poeltl. Still, many league insiders believe that just one first-rounder with some additional assets would get the deal done.

Jakob Poeltl has developed himself into a reliable contributor for the Spurs in recent seasons. He has been one of the best rim protectors in the NBA while averaging 12.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
