The Denver Broncos announced that rookie Bo Nix will be the team’s starting quarterback for the Week 1 clash against the Seattle Seahawks. This will make Nix the first rookie QB to start a season opener for the Broncos since franchise legend and Hall of Famer John Elway.
Nix, who beat out veterans Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson for the job, learned the news ahead of the practice on Wednesday.
“It will be a special moment,” Nix said while speaking with the reporters after the practice. “Obviously, that’s great to share with such a great player like John Elway, but [I] definitely want to [go] out there and [do] whatever I can do ultimately for the team.”
Nix, whom the Broncos took 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, was always considered the favorite to get the starting gig. He went on to justify that status with impressive performances in training camp and preseason. In two preseason games, Nix completed 23 out of 30 passes while throwing for 205 yards and two touchdowns.
Prior to joining the Broncos, Nix played five years of college football with Auburn and Oregon. He went 43–18 as a starter while throwing for 15,352, 113 touchdowns, and just 26 interceptions. He earned First-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2023 while playing for Oregon.
