Kyle Shanahan revealed on the The TK Show podcast with The Athletic‘s Tim Kawakami that he offered Bill Belichick a spot on his San Francisco 49ers coaching staff, however, the former New England Patriots head coach turned him down. He added that he was willing to offer Belichick any coaching role on his staff including the defensive coordinator position that Nick Sorensen now occupies.

“He loves football so much that you never know what he … I can’t believe that he’s not a head coach of a team right now,” Shanahan commented. “I know what I would do if I was an owner so that shocks me, and the last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick. But I know he just loves ball in its simplest form, so I threw it all out to him, whatever he wanted to do.”

Belichick left the Patriots in 2023, bringing an end to a 24-year career with the team. The longest-serving head coach in NFL history behind George Halas, Belichick led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles. During his 24 years with the team, Belichick led New England to 296 wins, the most with one franchise behind Halas’s 324 wins with the Chicago Bears. He won 333 games in total across his career, trailing only Don Shula with 347 victories.
