Cincinnati Bengals announced on Thursday that they’ve released veteran wide receiver Brandon LaFell. This came as a surprise for several reasons, including the fact that Bengals considered LaFell to be a valuable mentor to the younger players. The 31-year-old also already received his $1.25 million roster bonus.

Bengals also parted ways with undrafted rookie defensive end Ja’Von Rolland-Jones.

We want to thank Brandon for his contributions to Bengals,” – said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis. “He has been a consummate pro and teammate, a strong voice on the team and a great mentor for the young players. We wish him and his family the best in the future.

Lewis hinted earlier this week that there might be some cuts when it comes to the team’s receiving core since Bengals had seven WRs on their rosters. Since youngsters like Josh Malone and Tyler Boyd impressed at the training camp, Brandon LaFell was the one who didn’t make the final cut.

LaFell was taken in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. After playing three years with the Panthers, he joined New England Patriots with whom he won the Super Bowl champion XLIX. He signed a one year deal with the Bengals in 2016 and had a strong season which got him a two-year extension.

Brandon LaFell’s NFL career statistics include 394 receptions for 5,263 yards and 29 touchdowns.
