Chicago Bears’ offense might be in trouble for the start of the 2020 NFL season. The team’s head coach Matt Nagy confirmed on Wednesday that dependable running back David Montgomery suffered a groin injury and is set to miss the undisclosed amount of time.

Montgomery got hurt at practice, slipping after a handoff. He was visibly in pain after and had to be carted off the field.

The Bears are reportedly still unsure about the severity of Montgomery’s injury, but Nagy said that the team is trying to be optimistic.

“You try to stay as positive as you can,” Nagy told reporters. “You don’t know, really, what the answer is and where things are at.”

If Montgomery faces a prolonged absence, that could be a significant blow to Chicago’s hopes of returning to playoff contention. The 23-year-old player came through big for the Bears in his rookie year, finishing 2019 with 889 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. He was also a factor in the passing game, catching 25 passes for 185 yards and a TD.

In the worst-case scenario, the Bears are expected to increase the load of Pro Bowl return-specialist Tarik Cohen. The team’s RB core also includes veteran Cordarrelle Patterson, third-year player Ryan Nall, and undrafted rookie Artavis Pierce.
