Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have officially confirmed the signing of Vancouver Whitecaps’ wonderkid Alphonso Davies on Wednesday. Davies signed a contract with Bayern until 2023.

Bayern paid $13.5 million to Whitecaps in order to acquire Davies, which stands as a new Major League Soccer record. The previous record was held by Jozy Altidore, who joined Villareal from New York Red Bulls for a $10 million fee.

The $13 million fee, however, might increase to a total of $22 million if all performance-related incentives are met. Whitecaps will also have a percentage in case Bayern decides to sell Davies in the future.

Alphonso Davies is a very big talent,” – said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. “At the age of 17, he offers a lot of promise for the future. Alphonso already possesses great ability, which is why a lot of top clubs were keen on him. I’m delighted he’s chosen FC Bayern.

Alphonso Davies won’t join Bayern Munich immediately since he turns 18 in November and can’t play official games until then according to FIFA rules. Because of this, Bayern decided to let Davies remain with Vancouver Whitecaps until the end of this MLS season.

As a kid, I always dreamed of a moment like this,” – said Davies. “Now that the dream has come true, the work continues as always. I have to keep pushing and keep striving, and also keep being me on the field. Ever since I joined the Caps when I was 14, they molded me throughout the years into the pro that I’ve become. Thanks to the fans for supporting me, I enjoy playing in front of them in Vancouver.

Despite being just 17-years-old, Alphonso Davies has already played 54 games for Whitecaps’ in MLS and scored three goals. He has also made six appearances for Canada men’s national soccer team.

Ben loves sports so much but prefers watching other people do it. He prefers not to share what teams he's supporting but he is willing to admit that Lebron James is, in fact, the king.
