Bayern Munich just broke the bank and acquired Atletico Madrid’s defender Lucas Hernandez in a deal worth just over $90 million. This marks the biggest fee Bayern has spent on a single player in the club’s history.

Hernandez, who previously won the 2018 World Cup with France, will join his new club on June 30 and will sign a new five-year contract.

“I am very happy that in Lucas Hernandez we have been able to sign one of the best defensive players in the world and world champions.” – said Bayern director Hasan Salihamdzic. “Lucas can be used both in central defence and on the left. In addition, Lucas will continue our tradition of outstanding French players and strengthen our team.”

After the deal was made public, Hernandez went on to express his excitement about starting a new chapter in his career while also thanking his former club for the opportunity they gave him.

“This is a really important day in my footballing career.” – said Hernandez. “FC Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for all possible titles with Bayern. I’d like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my teammates and the fans for 12 wonderful years. Atletico will always remain a part of me. Now I’m looking forward to taking the next step with FC Bayern.”

Lucas Hernandez spent his entire career with Atletico Madrid, with whom he started his youth career in 2007. He had his professional debut in 2014 but had to wait until the 2016-17 season to fully break into the first team. Hernandez played 110 games for Atletico in all competitions and scored one goal.
