2018 didn’t turn out for the best for Chicago Fire, with the 1998’s MLS Cup winners finishing the regular season on the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference. If that wasn’t bad enough, they could now lose one of their best players, German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

After the game against D.C. United, Schweinsteiger was asked whether he will be in Chicago next year, considering the fact that his contract is expiring at the end of this year.

I have to think about it all a little bit, have some talks, then we will see: yes or no,” – he said.

The 34-year-old added that he would take a few days to think about his decision like he did in 2017. “Last year also, I took my time off and made my decision then, so let’s see.

Bastian Schweinsteiger joined Chicago Fire in March 2017 and immediately proved to be a valuable addition to the team. He contributed with three goals and six assists in helping the Fire to finish the regular season with the best record in MLS and reach the playoffs for the first time in five years.

This season, Schweinsteiger also played on a high level, but Chicago never managed to find its footing.

The season was not easy, we had many injured players. … But still, we were always close in some games, teams really didn’t dominate us,” – said Schweinsteiger off Fire’s 2018 season. “The mentality of this team, the character, we never gave up, which was good to see. Of course, you could see throughout the season it’s not a coincidence where we are.
