After locking standout midfielder Pedri to a new long-term deal last week, Barcelona is close to doing the same with talented forward Ansu Fati. This was confirmed by Barca’s manager Ronald Koeman during a press conference on Tuesday.

“I know they are close to agreeing on a new contract with Ansu,” Koeman said. “It’s big news for Barca because we’re talking about someone that can mark the club’s long-term future.”

Ansu Fati made his debut for the Catalan club as a 16-year-old in 2019 and has since become one of the club’s most important players. Fati’s rise to stardom was derailed by a serious knee injury that caused him to miss the better part of the 2020-21 season, but it appears it didn’t take away anything from his potential. He already has two goals and an assist in four games he played this season.

Fati is currently in the final year of his deal with Barca, meaning he could depart the club for free in the summer of 2022. This prompted several big-name clubs to contact his agent and see whether they could lure him away from Nou Camp.

However, according to multiple reports, Fati is not interested in leaving Spain and is focused on extending with the club he’s been part of for almost a decade.

Fati’s good performances for Barcelona also earned him a call-up for Spain’s national team. He made his debut in September 2020 and has since played four games on an international level.
