Barcelona’s superstar Lionel Messi didn’t need much time to set new records once the 2019/20 La Liga resumed. In a 4-0 win against Mallorca, Messi scored his 20th goal in the season and became the first player in La Liga history to do so in 12 consecutive seasons.

Barca established the lead against Mallorca early in the game, their first since La Liga season was suspended back in March, with midfielder Arturo Vidal scoring in the second minute of the game. After that, it was all Messi.

Messi first helped Barca extend their lead, dishing assists to Martin Braithwaite and Jordi Alba, who increased the lead to 3-0 with their respective goals. The 32-year-old Argentinian then took the spotlight himself, scoring a beautiful goal in overtime to add another record to his ever-growing list of accomplishments.

Messi first scored 20+ goals in the 2008/09 season which he finished with 23 goals. Since then, he had four 20+ seasons including this one, five seasons in which he scored 30 or more goals, and two seasons with 40+. Amazingly, he also managed to score 50 goals during the 2011/12 season.

Thanks to Messi’s contribution, Barcelona managed to stay on the top of La Liga table with 61 points. Their closest follower is also their biggest rival Real Madrid, who sits in second place with 58 points.

Barca’s next game comes on Tuesday when they host Leganes at Camp Nou.
