La Liga giants FC Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday night, losing 3-0 to group E winners Bayern Munich. This is the first time that the Blaugranes have failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament since the 2003-04 season.

Barca manager Xavi Hernandez expressed disappointment in his team’s elimination, admitting that Bayern dominated the game. “We always want to dominate but it was the opposite here. We must demand more. We’re Barca. This must be a point of inflection to change the dynamic and many more things,” Hernandez declared. Due to coming third in the group, his team will enter the Europa League competition in January.

Hernandez went on to urge his team to pick themselves up after the defeat, explaining that their main objective now will be to win the Europe League.

According to Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Muller, Barcelona seemed to lack the mentality needed to cope with the intensity of Champions League football. He complimented the Catalan club on its technical ability while indicating that the team seemed to require additional mental strength.

Barcelona returns to action in the La Liga match against Osasuna on Sunday. Currently, the Blaugranes find themselves in 7th place in the La Liga standings, a position that they will want to improve upon sooner rather than later.
