Barcelona showed that its great form in 2024-25 isn’t a mirage on the biggest stage, at least for their fans. In the first El Clasico of the season, Barca trashed Real Madrid in a 4-0 win while snapping a four-game losing streak against its bitter rivals.
The loss had an even bigger meaning, considering that Real was unbeaten in 42 consecutive La Liga matches. They needed to avoid just one more loss to match the record of 43 achieved by Barca in 2017 and 2018.
The first half of the game saw a tense match in which Real had several opportunities to score but failed to make them count. Barca took over the control in the second half, and it paid dividends right away.
Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski continued to be clinical in front of the goal, scoring in 56 minutes before adding another goal just two minutes later.
Real was still processing what happened when teenager Lamine Yamal scored a third goal for Barcelona in the 77th minute. Forward Raphina went on to add another one seven minutes later for the final score of 4-0.
Speaking after the game, Barca’s head coach Hansi Flick said that he is proud of his team.
“I’m very proud of the team and that all the players worked one hundred percent. I’m also very happy for Inaki Peña, who kept a clean sheet and was very good,” Flick said.
The win over Real capped off a great week for Barcelona, who also dominated their UEFA Champions League matchup against Bayern Munich on Wednesday and got away with a 4-1 win. The Catalan club now has a firm hold on the top of the La Liga table, being six points clear of second-placed Real after collecting 10 wins in the first 11 matches.
