Barbora Krejcikova is the new Wimbledon champion. Krejcikova won her first title at All England Club and her second career Grand Slam after beating Jasmine Paolini in a thrilling Finals match off on Saturday.
Krejcikova took the first set 6-2 on the back of a furious start that saw her win 10 out of the first 11 points in the match. Paolini went to the locker room after the first set, and the break appeared to have revitalized her. The Italian responded by racing to the 3-0 lead in the second set and winning it 6-2.
However, Paolini didn’t manage to complete her comeback. After each player defended their serve to make it 3-3, Krejcikova took control of the match with a break and later received an opportunity to serve for the title. Paolini defended two match points before capitulating on the third one.
Krejcikova, who won the French Open in 2021, captured the Wimbledon title after struggling with injuries and falling from No. 10 to No. 32 on the WTA rankings.
“I was telling myself to be brave … It was such a difficult match, such a great final, such a great competition and I enjoyed it so much and I’m super happy that I’m standing here and I can enjoy this moment,” Krejcikova said after the match. “I think nobody really believes it. I don’t think anyone will believe that I got to the final and that I won Wimbledon. I still can’t believe it … I am standing here, and I am a Wimbledon winner!”
Paolini, on the other hand, is still waiting for her first Grand Slam title. This is her second Grand Slam finals loss this season, having also reached the 2024 French Open finals before losing to Iga Świątek.
