La Liga side Atletico Madrid has reached a deal with Premier League champions Manchester City that will see them acquire highly-rated Argentinean striker Julian Alvarez.
According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, the deal could be potentially worth €95 million (approximately $104 million). Atletico will pay €75 million ($82 million) upfront and an additional €20 million ($22 million) in bonuses tied to Alvarez’s performances.
Alvarez already accepted a five-year deal with the Spanish club and is expected to be unveiled as the new Atletico player soon.
Alvarez’s deal marks an outgoing record in terms of transfer fees for City. It comes with a huge profit for the club, considering they paid around $18 million to River Plate for the player less than three years ago.
Alvarez is coming off a strong season with Man City, which saw him score 19 goals and dish 13 assists in 54 games in all competitions. This included providing 11 goals and nine assists in the Premier League to help the club to a back-to-back championship.
City has been reluctant to see Alvarez leave the club, but the player was reportedly pushing for the move as he wishes to receive a more prominent role. He didn’t have a clear path to doing that at Etihad Stadium, as Erling Haaland is the club’s undisputed first-choice up front.
