Atletico Madrid is through to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after winning a penalty shootout against Inter Milan on Wednesday night. Atletico joined Borussia Dortmund, who took down PSV, as the last two teams to secure places in the next round of the competition.

Atletico entered the game against Inter needing to overcome a one-goal deficit after suffering a 1-0 away loss in the first leg of the Round of 16 matchup between the two teams. However, it was the Seria A side who struck first after Federico Dimarco turned a beautiful Nicolo Barella pass into a goal in the 33rd minute.

Luckily for Atletico, they managed to score a goal of their own just a couple of minutes later through Antoine Griezman. Striker Memphis Depay then added another goal in the 87th minute to force extra time.

Neither team seemed ready to take major risks in extra time, which led to penalties where Atletico players were better at keeping their cool. Jan Oblak saved penalties from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen before Lautaro Martínez missed the entire goal to end Inter’s UCL journey.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Borussia got a 2-0 win over PSV after the two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus each scored a goal to send their team through.

Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will join Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, PSG, and Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
