Atlanta United will have to play the rest of their season without their starting fullback Brek Shea. Atlanta’s head coach Frank de Boer told reporters on Tuesday that Shea suffered a knee injury which requires surgery and that he is out of the season.

According to de Boer, Shea suffered the injury in Sunday’s game with Seattle Sounders, tearing his ACL and meniscus.

“He has a really bad injury in his knee,” – said De Boer. “I feel really sorry for him. He was looking good, looking fresh, and he got this injury. Everything that almost can be destroyed in his knee is destroyed.”

Shea was playing his first season with Atlanta, with whom he signed back in December. He made 10 starts and 19 appearances in total in 2019 while contributing with one assist.

Before joining Atlanta United, Brek Shea spent time with FC Dallas, Orlando City, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He made 216 career appearances in Major League Soccer, managing to score 29 goals and dish 25 assists.

Shea also played with USMNT, playing 34 matches with the senior team and scoring four goals.
