The Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve will miss the 2024 MLB All-Star Game due to a hand injury. He will be replaced on the American League roster by Minnesota Twins’ Willi Castro.
The Texas Rangers’ Marcus Semien will step in for Altuve as the starting second baseman for AL, marking his third consecutive start. He ensures that the Rangers, who host the event, have at least one All-Star starter.
Altuve has injured his left hand after being hit by a pitch from Twins’ Josh Winder earlier this month. The X-rays came back negative, but Altuve had to deal with swelling and was uncomfortable while holding a bat.
The former AL MVP will now use the All-Star break to get more rest and be ready for the second part of the season.
“Obviously, we have a very important second half of the season that I really want to be healthy (for),” Altuve told reporters. “Like I said two days ago, I’m proud and thankful with all the Houston Astros fans that voted, not only for me but also everybody on this team to make this dream possible. This is a huge, big deal for us, and we’re really thankful … Unfortunately, I got hit in the hand and am playing through some stuff. So, I really want to take these days and be ready for the second half.”
