German defender Mats Hummels will join Seria A side AS Roma on a one-year deal. Hummels is coming to Italy as a free agent after his contract with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund expired at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Hummels reportedly received interest from a number of European clubs, including AC Milan and Real Sociedad. However, an opportunity to play a significant role, as well as a reported salary of $2.8 million, likely turned things in Roma’s favor.
Roma hopes Hummels can bring stability to its defensive line after veteran center-back Chris Smalling left the club to join Saudi Pro League’s Al Fayha. The club is experiencing a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season, collecting just two points from three matches.
Mats Hummels started his professional career with Bayern Munich in 2006, but a lack of opportunities prompted him to switch to Borussia Dortmund in 2008. He initially joined Borussia on a season-long loan before the move became permanent.
While at Borussia, he established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga and helped the club win back-to-back Bundesliga titles and two DFB Pokals. He would go on to return to Bayern in 2016 and spend three years at Allianz Arena, adding three more Bundesliga trophies to his resume.
Hummels then signed with Borussia again ahead of the 2019–20 campaign and played an integral part in the club’s run to the UEFA Champions League finals this past season.
