Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis won’t get another chance to break Hall of Famer Pete Maravich’s NCAA scoring record. Davis, who fell four more points short of the record, doesn’t have any more games to play after Mercy’s season officially ended on Monday.

Mercy was previously knocked out of the Horizon League tournament after a 71-66 loss to Youngstown State, in which Davis scored 22 points to get his total NCAA total to 3,664. Maravich scored record 3,667 points in his three seasons with LSU.

After the game, Davis held hope that Mercy would get an invitation to the third-tier College Basketball Invitational or that College Hoops Postseason 8 tournament would have its inaugural event in 2023. However, CBI opted not to invite Titans, who have a 14-19 record this season, while College Hoops Postseason 8 will be held in 2024.

With his pursuit of the NCAA scoring record over, Davis told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he feels “cheated.”

“I’m upset about it,” said Davis. “I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can’t ever give back to me. I think it’s selfish — and weird — that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn’t be in the tournament because they didn’t want me to break the record.”

Davis, who played five years of college basketball with Mercy, will still end his college career with some records on his resume. His 144 consecutive games with double figures and 588 career 3-pointers are both most by a player in NCAA history.
