Veteran catcher Max Stassi is staying with the Los Angeles Angels for three more years after inking a new contract with the franchise. The deal, which runs through 2024, is reportedly worth $17.5 million.
Stassi, who was set to become a free agent after this upcoming season, will earn $3 million in 2022 and then $7 million in each of the two following years. The Angels also have a 2025 club option worth $7.5 million. Stassi will get a $500K buyout if the option isn’t picked up.
Stassi finished the 2021 campaign with a .241 batting average, 13 home runs, and 35 RBIs. While these aren’t exactly eye-catching numbers, the 31-year-old player does bring strong defense and big power to the table. The Angels also appreciate his game-calling abilities.
This will likely end up as a good deal for both sides. The Angles will get a capable catcher who can produce average offense and provide stability for a fair price. On the other hand, Stassi gets long-term stability after needing seven seasons to become a mainstay in the majors.
Max Stassi made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 2013. He spent six and a half years with the franchise, playing in a limited role, before being traded to the Angels midway through the 2019 season. Stassi’s career stats include 301 games player, .225 batting average, 98 RBIs, and 32 homers.
