Veteran tennis player Andy Murray has revealed his intention to retire from the sport after the 2024 Paris Olympics. This comes after the 37-year-old player was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon after struggling to recover from a spinal cyst procedure. He subsequently added that he would not be participating in the upcoming hard court season.
“Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament,” Murray announced in a post on social media platform X. “Competing for Team GB has been by far the most memorable weeks of my career and I’m extremely proud to get to do it one final time!” With the Olympic tennis tournament draw set to occur on Thursday, Murray will have to wait to find out who his first opponent will be.
Murray will look to win his third Olympic gold medal when he takes to the Roland Garros courts for the Olympic tournament. While the latter part of the Scottish tennis star’s career has been marred by injuries, he won three Grand Slam tournaments, namely two Wimbledon championships and one US Open. He also won the Davis Cup with Great Britain in 2015, thereby helping them to their first victory since 1936. The Olympic tennis tournament begins on Saturday, July 27.
