Manchester United announced today that Alexis Sanchez will fly out to join the rest of the squad in the USA.
Under US law, any person convicted of fraud is automatically denied a visa to enter the country. Sanchez, 30, received a 16-month suspended jail sentence in February for tax fraud in Spain.
The club hoped that a workaround could be found before the squad left for America but it failed to materialize. Sanchez, left in limbo, trained on his own at the club’s Carrington complex. However, the club’s official Instagram account confirmed the striker is soon to join his teammates.
It is welcome news for Jose Mourinho. Speaking ahead of Friday’s match with Club America, the Portuguese aired his concerns about the disruption to his plans: “Hopefully he [Sanchez] join us later. Because it would be important at least to work with Mata, Alexis, Martial, which we think are the players we have in attack for the start of the season. No Lukaku, no Lingard, no Marcus Rashford, so if Alexis is not working with us for 15 or 20 days it will be very bad.”
Things seem to be looking up for the United boss after all…
