The contract saga between the San Francisco 49ers and their star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk just had another twist. According to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Aiyuk officially asked the 49ers to trade him.
Aiyuk has been looking for an extension, being set to enter the final year of his rookie contract in 2024, which will see him earn $14.124 million. The 49ers, on the other hand, showed little interest in giving him one, at least at the price he is asking for.
Reportedly, Aiyuk has been frustrated with the lack of progress in the negotiation process and now wants out. On the other hand, the 49ers told interested teams that they have no intention of trading the wideout.
Aiyuk is coming off a breakthrough campaign in 2023. He finished the season with 75 receptions for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. The former Arizona State product has 269 catches, 3,931 receiving yards, and 25 TDs in four years as a pro.
Losing Aiyuk would be a big blow for the 49ers’ offense, which is why the franchise isn’t open to entertaining trade offers for him. But Aiyuk is reportedly willing to test their resolve, intending to remain away from the team until he either gets traded or gets a new deal to his liking.
