Second-year wideout Deebo Samuel is joining the San Francisco 49ers’ lengthy list of injured players. Samuel strained his hamstring in Sunday’s loss to Washington and will most likely be out for the remainder of 2020.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the news to reporters on Monday, saying that the only chance Samuel plays again this season is if the team makes the playoffs.

“He’s going to be out awhile, not ready to put a timeline on it yet,” said Shanahan. “I think we’d have to make the playoffs for him to come back.”

This scenario seems highly unlikely, as San Francisco faces a mammoth challenge to make it to the postseason with their current 5-8 record.

They would need to win all three of their remaining games while getting other results to match in order to have a shot at the last wild-card spot in the NFC.

After a promising rookie campaign, Deebo Samuel was limited to just seven games this season due to various injuries. He will most likely finish 2020 with 33 catches for 391 yards and one touchdown.

Injuries have been the story of the season for the 49ers as some of their key players struggled to stay healthy. Other than Samuel, San Francisco lost a handful of other players to injuries, including star tight end George Kittle, Pro Bowl defensive end Nick Bosa, and starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
