The San Francisco 49ers will have their star left tackle Trent Williams on the field for the Week 1 game against the New York Jets. Williams officially ended his holdout on Tuesday and will rejoin the team after getting an improved deal.
Williams decided to miss training camp, which included not being present for practices and preseason games, in order to put pressure on the 49ers to give him an improved deal. Despite being considered the best offensive lineman in the league, even at the age of 36, Williams was “only” set to make $20.05 million in 2024 while having no more guaranteed money on his deal.
Now, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers decided to give Williams what he asked for. He will now be on a three-year, $82.66 million contract that includes $48 million in guaranteed money and a salary bump in 2024 to $27.5 million.
Even if Williams will have $2 million deducted due to fines he incurred for missing training camp, he will still be the highest-paid OL in the league in 2024 in terms of cash received.
Trent Williams has been a standout performer for the 49ers since joining the team in a trade with Washington in 2020. He earned four Pro Bowl nods, extending his career streak to 11, while also making the First-team All-Pro in each of the past three years.
