The San Francisco 49ers’ star running back Christian McCaffrey might be in for another lengthy spell on the sidelines. McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury in a 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night that could cause him to miss the remainder of the season.
McCaffrey initially missed the first eight games of the 2024 campaign with Achilles tendinitis. He looked rusty since coming back but was off to a great start against the Bills. The All-Pro had 53 rushing yards on seven carries while making two catches.
Unfortunately for McCaffrey, his potential best performance of the season came to an end early in the second quarter. He attempted a run on 1st & 10 at Buffalo’s 25-yard line before sliding to the turf without contact and signaling he wanted to come out. After limping off the field, he headed to the locker room and didn’t return.
It is likely that McCaffrey got hurt several plays before. He made a run for an 18-yard gain before being tripped by Bills safety Taylor Rapp and landing hard on his right knee.
Speaking with reporters after the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that McCaffrey’s injury could be season-ending.
“I think potentially [it’s season-ending],” Shanahan said. “I think PCL is usually a couple of weeks, but I’m not exactly sure yet.”
If this is the last of McCaffrey in 2024, he will finish the season with 202 yards and zero touchdowns in four games.
