The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was set to have elbow surgery earlier this week, but that still hasn’t happened. According to multiple reports, Purdy’s procedure has been postponed due to inflammation-caused swealing in the elbow.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Purdy’s elbow will get the next evaluation in early March. The plan is still to have a UCL repair procedure that would see the player be ready for action once the 2023 NFL campaign starts.

The 49ers will hope that Purdy is back in time for training camp, which would allow them to hold a proper QB competition. While the Iowa State product is considered to be the favorite to start in Week 1 of next season, San Francisco also wants to give Trey Lance, the third overall pick in 2021, a fair shot at the starting job.

Brock Purdy was selected with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, earning the moniker “Mr. Irrelevant.” He initially started the season as the team’s third-string QB but was forced to take over under center when Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo both went down with season-ending injuries.

Purdy did an astonishing job for San Francisco, winning the first five games he started and finishing the regular season with 1,374 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and four picks. He also won the wild-card and divisional-round matchups in the playoffs, but the right elbow injury in NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles prevented him from taking the 49ers any further.
