The San Francisco 49ers have lost their starting quarterback for the second time this season. Their signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a broken foot in a 17-33 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and will be out for the season.

Garoppolo got hurt during the game’s opening drive after taking a sack and having his foot stuck under the Dolphins’ defensive end Jaelan Phillips. He went for a check on the sidelines and didn’t return to the game,  being replaced by the rookie Brock Purdy.

San Francisco’s head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Garoppolo’s injury after the game, revealing that the veteran will have season-ending surgery. The 49ers previously saw Week 1 starter Trey Lance go down with an ankle injury at the start of the 2022 campaign.

Purdy, who was selected as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, did well after stepping into the spotlight. The Iowa State product completed 25 out of 37 passes attempted while throwing for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Previously, the 22-year-old player only attempted nine passes in his pro career.

Losing Garoppolo is a disaster for the San Francisco 49ers, especially considering that they were considered one of the Super Bowl favorites so far in the season. The team will most likely roll with Purdy because of his familiarity with their system, but they are expected to take a look at the free-agent market and bring in a veteran option as well.
