The Houston Texans continued their fire sale on Tuesday by trading away defensive end Charles Omenihu. According to multiple reports, the Texans dealt Omenihu to the San Francisco 49ers and picked up a sixth-rounder in 2023 in exchange.

The trade doesn’t come as a surprise from the Texans’ standpoint, considering they haven’t trusted Omenihu much lately. After the 24-year-old started the first two games, he plummeted down the depth chart and was a healthy scratch in Weeks 5 and 6. He returned to the active roster in the next two games but played less than 50 percent of the snaps.

Houston are probably happy they managed to get some compensation for Omenihu as they reportedly thought about waiving him if he remained on the team after the NFL trade deadline.

The 49ers, on the other hand, should also feel good about themselves. While Omenihu hasn’t performed lights out this year, he has shown the ability to be an efficient pass rusher in the past. At worse, Texas product will add depth to San Francisco’s defense and contribute to special teams.

Omenihu entered the league as the Texans’ fifth-round pick in 2019. He suited up for 35 games in Houston and contributed with 41 tackles, 7.0 sacks, 24 QB hits, four pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.
