Next year’s MLS All-Star game won’t be seeing MLS XI go against a European powerhouse. Instead, the game will host Mexico’s Liga MX All-Star team.

According to the official announcement, the 2020 MLS All-Star game will take place at LAFC’s Banc of California Stadium on July 29th.

“We are so pleased to bring the 2020 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target to Los Angeles, one of the great soccer markets in North America,” – said MLS commissioner Don Garber in a statement. “As we celebrate our 25th season, we wanted to deliver a unique and unprecedented format for our annual All-Star Game. Our first ever game between the best of MLS and LIGA MX’s top players is the perfect way to build on the growing relationship between the two top soccer leagues in the region.”

This move represents another step towards the collaboration of MLS and Liga MX. In recent years, two leagues have devised several joint competitions including Campeones Cup and Leagues Cup. The latter will get an expansion in 2020, with the number of teams being upped from eight to 16.

The MLS All-Star Game has exclusively featured the European club as an opponent to the MLS All-Star team since 2005. Some of the teams that took part included Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. The MLS XI lost the last four games, with their most recent win coming in 2015 against Tottenham.
